Mind Map Reflection
This course has taught me a great deal about the realm of sustainability, especially due to
the unique approach in which this course delivers its information. Inherently, other courses about
sustainability I have taken in the past have showcased the basic ideas surrounding the topic, such
as threats and opportunities. However, while making this mind map, it was a fun way to
incorporate new ideas such as green consultants, sustainable engineering as well as indigenous
knowledge into the information I already had as background knowledge. When approaching this
mind map, I took some time to go through the lecture notes I had created to divide the sections of
course by topic. From this, I created 5 main topics which are the effects of climate change on the
environment, effects of climate change on humanity, measures of climate change, threats to
sustainability, and solutions/ways to be mor sustainable. It is important to note that each lecture
does not fall into one specific category, but ideas from the lectures can be utilized in different
categories. For instance, some ideas from the geographical views of sustainability lecture are
used in the effects of climate change on the environment as well as the threats to sustainability
threads.
Additionally, some ideas that I was not familiar with before coming into this course were
mainly included in the solutions and ways to be more sustainable node. Specifically, reviewing
the industry perspective lecture as well as the sustainable engineering ideologies allowed me to
gain further insight into the work being done to tackle issues revolving sustainability. For
instance, the sustainable design principles include reviewing actions to see if objectives can be
met with alternatives, modifying the actions, and using technological advancements to help
tackle issues. These principles aim to replace the current measures and engineer new creative
solutions to tackle pressing concerns. Furthermore, distinguishing between a circular and linear
economy highlights a problem (current linear economy) and solution (circular economy). These
ideas stem from the goal of creating an economic market where producers and consumers can
limit waste, use biodegradable products as well as increase the lifespan of goods in an effort to
reduce, reuse and recycle.
