Behind the Scenes When British author George Orwell wrote Animal Farm, he hoped to provide a literary critique of Stalinism, a movement that began in Russia after the Bolshevik Revolution and eventually led to the transformation of the Soviet Union into a dictatorship. Orwell was very critical of Joseph Stalin, and of the Russians who supported him. The characters in Animal Farm represent political leaders who “tricked” the Russian people into accepting Stalin’s version of communism as well as the Russian people who allowed Stalin to carry out his plans without fighting back. His novel even has something to say about the people who tried to prevent Stalin’s progress. George Orwell was a socialist, and he was particularly unhappy with the way Stalin and his followers twisted the ideals of socialism to serve their own desires for absolute power. According to Orwell, Russian communists gradually transformed a noble and democratic cause into a political system built around terrible abuses of power designed to control the masses.
