1. Introduction
Toastmasters International is a non-profit company that helps people to develop public speaking
and leadership skills via a global network of meeting places since 1924. It helps people from
various backgrounds to become much more confident in communicating, speaking, and leading
in front of audiences so that people can win in a job interview or complete a job assignment
easily. Their headquarter is located in Englewood, Colo. and they have more than 364,000 above
16,200 branches in 145 countries (Toastmasters, 2021).
Toastmasters was founded in Bloomington, Illinois, United States, by Ralph C. Smedley while
he was working with the Young Men's Christian Association also called YMCA (Toastmasters,
2021). Smedley who is the director of education at the YMCA decided to encourage the people
who need to learn the ways to communicate, conduct meetings, schedule events, and work on
committees. He wanted to establish a club where they could practise these skills in a social
setting and responded well to the concept which is called Toastmasters Club. Toastmaster was a
famous phrase that applied to an individual who has toasts at the feast and other events. On 24
March 1905, the first unofficial meeting of Toastmaster was held. The attendees leading and
interacting at each meeting accordingly like what Toastmasters meetings do today. Talks were
reviewed by Smedley and the knowledgeable members while the youngsters were asked to join
in the tests.
Toastmaster meeting is created as a learning-by-doing workshop in which learners are in a nostress environment to strengthen their speech and leadership skills. The participants will review
each other’s presentations and there is no instructor in the Toastmasters meeting. The critical
aspect of the program’s success is the feedback process. Members will give an improvised
speech according to assigned topics, conduct discussions and enhance related skills such as
parliamentary procedure, timekeeping, and grammar. The program that helps members to
enhance their communication skills and acquires competencies to connect and lead is called
Pathways (Toastmasters, 2021).
