vaccine

-possibly HBV (hepatitis B vaccine),
if not previously given
Give IM immunizations in the vastus
lateralis or ventrogluteal muscle in
infants and young children, and into
the deltoid muscle for older children
and adolescents
Give subcutaneous injections in the
outer aspect of the upper arm or
anterolateral thigh
Use strategies to minimize discomfort:
-provide distraction
-apply topical anesthetic prior to
injection
Give infants a concentrated oral
sucrose solution 2 min prior to,
during, and 3 min after immunization

-use non-nutritive sucking
(pacifiers) during procedures
Vaccines protect against serious
childhood illnesses
Vaccines, like any other medicine,
may cause reactions (usually mild),
such as fever or irritability
Babies are checked for growth,
development, and feeding, among
other things
A severe allergic reaction
(anaphylaxis) can occur in response
to any vaccine, and is a
contraindication for receiving further
doses of that vaccine or other
vaccines containing that substance
Moderate or severe illnessnes with or
without fever are precautions to
receiving immunizations
The common cold & other minor
illnesses are not contraindicated to
immunizations
Administration of a vaccine stimulates
the immune system to produce
antibodies against a specific disease
Vaccines contain the infectious
organism, but it is either killed or
weakened to prevent causing the
disease
Antibodies after they destroy the
infection antigen, but memory cells are
formed to protect from future
exposures to that same infection
This builds immunity against the
antigen to protect against future
exposure
The Advisory Committee on
immunization practices makes
recommendations and create guidelines
regarding immunizations
children who were born preterm should
received the dose of each vaccine
according to the immunization schedule
