HUM 111 Week 8 Assignment 2 {2020} Strayer University Abstract This paper contrasts the life and accomplishments of two great women in history (Cleopatra of Egypt, and Wu Ze2tian of ... China). Both were intelligent and powerful rulers, but their rise to power were not both well-earned in my humble opinion. This paper looks at the differences in beginnings. Both were born into relative royalty, however the social and political climates were starkly different. In this paper I want to show that each were brilliant, but that Cleopatra was driven more by a love for Egypt and a hatred for Rome. I believe that Cleopatra knew that Rome had put her family in power and that Egypt would never be what it once was. In contrast, Wu Zetian was motivated by power first, although she wanted to champion women’s accomplishments. I believe that this was a secondary motivation. My position is that Cleopatra was forged by the brutality and corruption of her time, whereas Wu Zetian manipulated her way to a place where she could exact revenge, and put in power those loyal to her. However, I believe that Wu Zetian understood the politics of the day, and played the game very, very well to ascend to the place of power she occupied. Life & Background Wu Zetian (Wu Zhou her birth name) was born in what is now Xi’an, China in 625 CE. She was born to a politically connected family during the Tang Dynasty. The Tang dynasty enjoyed great wealth and connected trade on the Silk road. It also enjoyed - - - - - - - - - - - - - - In contrast, for Cleopatra, I believe that she truly loved Egypt and wanted to see the seat of power moved back. She wanted the lives of her people to be enriched, and have them return to self-rule. In the end, she played the cards dealt to her. She knew that the only way to regain power was by the same alliances that made Rome great. Those alliances were by marriage and bloodline. Every bit of what Cleopatra received was well earned, either by grief or by hard work. Wu Zetian was brilliant, but her seat of power was grabbed by opportunity and incompetence on the part of other leaders. Some of her achievements I believed help propagandize her leadership. I am all for political gain, but she mastered it. A true demagogue by virtue and means. References From the Strayer resource Library: Newman, Frances, & Stickney. (2015). Cleopatra VII. Salem Press.
