General Hip Anatomy
Joint consists of articulation between the head of the femur and the acetabulum
Acetabulum
o formed from three bones
ilium
ischium
pubis
Ball-and-socket type of joint which can move in all planes
o Flexion/Extension
o Abduction/Adduction
o Medial/lateral rotation (internal/external)
High level of stability created by:
o bony architecture
o acetabular labrum and hip capsule which deepen the socket
Labrum is a soft cartilage that surround the acetabulum. It protects the
joint surface and deepens the joint to provide more stability
o Musculature and ligaments
High level of similarity to shoulder joint
o Ball and socket joint
o Can move in all planes
o Hip joint is significantly more stable than the shoulder joint due to deeper socket
and supporting ligaments, and musculature

Hip Ligaments
Ligamentum teres
o Intracapsular ligament that surrounds the foveal artery
Iliofemoral ligament
o Strongest of the ligaments
o Prevents hyperextension of the hip
o Y shape in appearance and originates at the anterior inferior iliac spine and inserts
at intertrochanter line of the femur
Pubofemoral ligament
o Triangular in shape between superior pubic rami and intertrochanter line of the
femur
o Prevents excessive abduction and extension
Ischiofemoral ligament
o Between ischium and the greater trochanter of the femur
o Prevents hyperextension and holds the femoral head in the acetabulum
Nerve Involvement
The muscles of the hip and pelvic girdle are innervated from the lumbar and sacral plexus
which is known collectively as the lumbar sacral plexus. The anterior divisions of nerves
include:
o Obturator nerve
o Femoral nerve
o Tibial nerve (a division of the sciatic nerve that runs more anteriorly than
posteriorly). (Short et al., 2018)
