NR 602 IHuman CASE RASH WEEK 6 PLAN The diagnosis of roseola is made clinically based on the presence of the two phases: fever and rash. You child has been diagnosed with Exanthem subitum (Roseola) ... is an infecton caused by the human herpes virus 6 or 7. This conditon is most common in children 2 years of age and younger. It is usually marked by several days of high fever, followed by a distnctve rash just as the fever breaks. Your child's lymph nodes may be swollen and tender. Small red spots appear on your child's chest and abdomen afer her fever goes away. They are about the size of a penny and may be flat or raised. They are not itchy or painful. The rash may spread to the rest of his body. Your child symptoms usually go away on their own. Ibuprofen or acetaminophen can be given to decrease your child's pain and fever. Educaton- It’s important to keep the child hydrated. Dehydraton Symptoms include lethargy, pale color, diminished or no tears, decreased urine output, dry lips and increased pulse rate. Pedialyte is a great drink that will hydrate her. it contains electrolytes that are needed to maintain proper electrolyte balance. Roseola is contagious and may be spread via airborne or droplet when an infected child coughs, sneezes or talks, proper hand hygiene is imperatve to avoid spreading or acquiring the disease. The child is no longer contagious once the rash has appeared. Treatment is supportve with rest, maintaining fluid intake and antpyretcs such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen to control the fever or pain. Your child rash should subside within a few days and she should fully recover within a week. Referral: No referral is needed at this tme. Follow-Up: Follow-up appointment within 2 weeks for evaluaton, however if symptoms worsen, new symptoms arise, or other complicatons occur, call the ofce immediately. If the child experiences any shortness of breath, complicatons with breathing, or any other emergent situaton, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. Medicaton: No antbiotcs are warranted at this tme as roseola is a viral infecton and not sensitve to pharmaceutcal therapy. Treatment is supportve care. Symptom management will assist with an overthe-counter acetaminophen suspension consistng of a specifc dosage calculaton to be as follows: Rx: Children’s Tylenol 160mg/5 ml Sig: Take 4ml by mouth every 4-6 hours as needed for fever: Do not exceed more than 5 doses in 24 hours. Dispense: 1 botle Reflls: 0 May buy over the counter (Epocrates, 2017).
