The only sounds were the soft crunch of snow beneath my feet and the hollow, lonely moaning of the wind through the spruces. I pulled my hood tight and began to climb, my destination being the silhouette of a ridge I could make out against the clear starry backdrop. 2 As I rose above the tree line, the valley opened below, the peaks opposite spread across the horizon, and behind those mountains, the sky was no longer black but navy blue. I paused and took it all in, catching my breath and resting my sore muscles before resuming my climb. 3 When I reached the ridge, I found a large boulder like a table, sat cross-legged on it and pulled out of my pocket some raisins and a couple of biscuits with peanut butter on them. I pulled my elbows in toward my body, hunched my shoulders forward and watched, as the sky across the valley became poetry. 4 I saw a deep purple ribbon fade as a rainbow does into scarlet, and thin wisps of cloud reached their fiery fingers above the snowfields, which I could now see in the gathering light. I must have eaten my biscuits mechanically, for at some point I realized they were gone; when the sun finally peaked over the mountains across the way, I also discovered that I was cold. 5 I rose and began my descent, following my trail back into the tree line and eventually back to camp. Roger and Michael were both up and milling about—Roger starting a fire and Michael unpacking food for breakfast. They asked where I had been, and I told them and added that it was quite a sight. They nodded and proceeded with breakfast. 6 As the fire crackled, I took my gloves off and drew close to it, holding my hands out over the heat. Roger made a comment about the sun and the sky being so pretty, for the sun had risen enough for base camp to see it, but as I looked up at the normal sky, the only thing I could think of to say was “Yeah, it’s OK.” 7 Michael proceeded to cook pancakes, hot and soft right off the fire, and bacon smelling like heaven, but I was not hungry, for I’d already filled up on cold biscuits. “Aren’t you going to eat?” he asked me, half out [Show More]
