What are... they? ● All of the people at the mental hospital believes that Chief Bromden’s two handicaps are that of being mute, and also being deaf. 2. What purpose might it serve Kesey to have his narrator pretend to be deaf and mute? ● Since the narrator puts on an act of being deaf and mute, the people surrounding him talk to each other freely, with no doubt in their mind that he can hear them. This results in the narrator being able to understand everything that is going on around him, which allows for a more knowledgeable narration of the book from his standpoint. 3. Why might there be so much machine-imagery in Bromden’s narration? It’s clear that there are not actually clogs and wheels in the nurse’s bag or fog machines in the mental health ward--what are we to make of this imagery and motif? ● There may be so much machine-imagery in Bromden’s narration to contrast nature and its beauty to the true aspects of society.
