After the commencement of the Civil War, American industry skyrocketed. Immigrants crowded the nation in hopes of finding jobs. Oil, railroad, and steel monopolies rose, and new technology helped im... prove factories and businesses. The government played an almost Laissez-Faire role towards this economic growth, but promoted business in all aspects. The Industrial Revolution began the idea of hiring wage workers instead of opening family businesses, saw an increase in immigration levels, established monopolies that controlled many industries, as well as caused disputes between farmers and bankers Following the rise of factories in the city, many people turned to working as wageearning laborers instead of on a family business, since most small businesses weren’t able to compete, and had to form labor unions to protect their rights and attempt to stop immigrants from taking their jobs. These workers became specialized, or trained to do a certain aspect of a full job. Because it was easier and cheaper to have jobs done by specialization, skilled laborers weren’t as needed, and most of them were forced to underperform as wage-workers in order to maintain a living.
