As a front line worker, who has also served as, manager and director in the past, I can attest to the fact that there has been a lot of change in management styles. I also know the current trends of short staffing are an issue. It affects moral. We have agency staff currently, who are not required to take call or work the holidays- this, of course, helps with staffing but leaves the most undesirable shifts to the lesser paid permanent staff. It also leads to more transient staff, which come into the OR and tells the permanent staff how “we do it”. The managers, in turn, are paying higher fees for these nurses who cannot join with shared governance. The temporary staff usually does not hold the same incentives for the unit to succeed because they do not receive benefits/bonuses. We all hold the same common goal- positive patient outcomes; however, not all are conscience about time efficiency or use of supplies. Often times, the surgeons prefer to not have the agency nurses in their procedures because they do not know/trust them. It also causes the permanent staff to need to orient the agency nurses to the OR and this is also stressful. I recently had a new
