Being aware of our strengths and weaknesses allows us to recognize our limitations so we can figure out how to overcome them, face challenges, problem solve, and make decisions (Rasheed, 2015). Two core values that influence my patient care and interaction with others are treat people with kindness and respect as I would want to be treated (do onto others as you would have done to you) and also, have sympathy - remember there is a path a person may have walked that has shaped them into the person sitting in front of you before forming an opinion/judgement of them. These two values were put to the test while working under a charge nurse who was very argumentative and aggressive, especially to me. The tone of the atmosphere on any given day was explicitly dependent upon her mood. She constantly argued any decision or point I made making me feel like I lacked necessary knowledge and skills, which eventually affected my confidence. She was very opinionated and if you did not agree with her she would criticize you in front of everyone. Thankfully, she eventually resigned. I was new to that setting and so during that time I believed it was me always doing wrong, rather than her. I never had the courage to confront her and I do not deal with conflict very well. Since her resignation and working under a true nurse leader, it has become very evident that the problem all along was with her, not me.
