Document Content and Description Below

APN Professional Development Plan An advanced practice nurse (APN) has many responsibilities. Each state that a nurse practices in has a different scope of practice for APN’s, so in order to know ... the responsibilities, one must view the state guidelines. Nebraska APN scope of practice has different requirements. When the requirements are known an NP must also understand the competencies and the strengths and weaknesses they possess. Understanding the strengths and weaknesses can also help an NP develop and understand the leaderships skills necessary to be a successful nurse practitioner. The purpose of this paper is to view the scope of practice of an APN, the competency of an APN and the leadership skills required to lead as an APN. APN Scope of Practice: To lead as an APN, a practitioner must first know the educational and licensure requirements needed in their state to be able to practice. Nebraska has its own requirements for a nurse practitioner. First, in order to apply to receive the nurse practitioner license, a nurse must graduate from a graduate-level program for advanced practice registered nurses and the program must be accredited by a national accrediting body. The graduate must then pass a national certification examination and have completed 30 hours of pharmacotherapeutics. The APN must provide evidence that they completed at least 2000 contact hours under the direction of a doctor (Nebraska Health and Human Services, 2004). After an APN is eligible to practice, they must understand Nebraska’s scope of practice for an advanced practice nurse. Nurse practitioners are able to act as a primary care provider as long as they have completed the transition to practice. This means that the advanced practice nurse is able to work independently. In some states, NPs are unable to work independently. In Nebraska, an NP has full practice. Full practice means that the nurse practitioner can diagnose https://www.coursehero.com/file/50593048/APN-Professional-Development-Plandocx/ This study resource was shared via CourseHero.c [Show More]
