The article, Asian Men Can Jump written by Gish Jen, analyzes the stereotypical Asian
culture through the life of Jeremy Lin. Throughout the article, Jen exploits these Asian standards
with Jeremy Lin's unexpected Journey of becoming the first Asian-American player to rise to
prominence in the National Basketball Association. Gish Jen uses metaphorical analysis, logos,
and pathos to break the stigma of what people believe Asian culture is supposed to be.
Gish Jen begins and follows through the article with the use of metaphors to compare her
brother, Bob, to Jeremy Lin’s story. To start out Gish Jen compares her brother by describing him
as athletic. Comparatively, Bob grew up with similar aspirations to Jeremy. Bob became a Nike
endorsed marathoner which was unfortunate to his parents because he did not become a doctor
like they expected of him. However, this metaphorical analysis of the two Asian athletes proves
the belief that Asian culture is not all the same. Both Bob and Jeremy provided themselves with a
successful and happy career that did not face the Asian ideologies (doctor, lawyer, etc.). The
multiple usage of metaphors in Asian Men Can Jump helps serve Gish Jen’s purpose because the
two life stories of Bob and Jeremy elaborates more about how not every Asian family is the
same. Gish Jen explains Jeremy Lin’s upbringing did not consist of strict parenting, but instead
he was encouraged by his parents to be whatever he desired
