There are lots of great office facilities and it is never a problem getting skilled workers to work for us – in fact more jobs were created in Milton Keynes over the last decade than anywhere else in the UK! Milton Keynes is like living in a village within a city – we love our friendly neighbourhood with small shops and playgrounds. However, we find it really frustrating getting to the bigger shops and supermarkets by car as we often get stuck in traffic at roundabouts. I love living in Milton Keynes. I have a great flat in the city centre that is really near restaurants and pubs and it’s only a five minute walk from work. However, it is very difficult to get around the rest of the city. Bus journeys are slow, with lots of stops, so I tend to take taxis instead. Milton Keynes is the only city where you can run a marathon without going on any roads and where there are parks and green spaces all around you! It’s a great place to stay fit and healthy. I wish that they could do more to encourage people to cycle and walk and not use their cars. 22 year old Young family Personal trainer Leader of Milton Keynes Business Link 5 © OCR 2022 J384/03/RB Jun22 Turn over BLANK PAGE 6 © OCR 2022 J384/03/RB Jun22 Fig. 4 Annotated map of Milton Keynes, 1960 The M1 motorway, going from London to Leeds, was opened in 1959. It was the first motorway in the UK. 15 villages were incorporated into the plan for Milton Keynes. After the Second World War, the UK government decided that more housing and work space was needed outside of London and designed ‘New Towns’. Milton Keynes was the largest; designed for 250 000 people to live and work in. 82 83 84 85 86 87 88 89 90 91 92 93 42 41 40 39 38 37 36 35 7 © OCR 2022 J384/03/RB Jun22 Turn over Fig. 5 Annotated map of Milton Keynes, 2020 A series of water storage lakes were built which are designed to fill up when river levels increase. This reduces the risk of flooding. The grid system of roads means areas of housing, industry and shopping use have been built in separate sections. 25% of Milton Keynes is green space with parks and gardens in each residential area. In order to reduce traffic congestion, Milton Keynes was designed on a grid system with roundabouts approximately every 1 km to keep traffic moving. 82 83 84 85 86 87 88 89 90 91 92 4241403938373635 The maps (Fig. 4 and Fig. 5) show the same area and at the same scale. 8 © OCR 2022 J384/03/RB Jun22 Fig. 6 Green Energy Plans in Milton Keynes 270 km of ‘redway’ – dedicated paths for cyclists and pedestrians Less than 1% of cars are electric 75% of household rubbish is recycled Current Over 1500 houses are being built on green space every year Position Milton Keynes can be the world’s greenest and most sustainable city, using the opportunities of a growing city to tackle challenges of climate change. We can create a more prosperous city for all our people and future generations which is carbon negative by 2050. Vision for the future Encourage more use of ‘redways’ for commuting and leisure Triple the number of electric cars and buses 25% of the city area is open spaces, so more trees can be planted PLAN FOR GREEN MILTON KEYNES Increase solar panels on buildings Expand to the largest recycling programme in the UK 9 © OCR 2022 J384/03/RB Jun22 A ‘redway’ around one of the water storage lakes. This gives people the opportunity to enjoy the area on foot or by bike. More trees will be planted as part of the plans for green Milton Keynes. There is a small bike hire scheme in Milton Keynes. This could be expanded to mor [Show More]
