ELM 510 Topic 1 Assignment: Student Engagement Strategies Description: A crucial element of classroom management is to develop strategies to engage students, promote individual and group motivation, and encourage positive behaviors among students. As a future teacher going into the classroom, it is important to develop a toolkit of effective engagement and classroom management strategies for use in any classroom. Part 1: Effective Engagement Strategies Toolkit Research three videos that successfully demonstrate engagement, motivation, and classroom management strategies that would be useful for the grade level you want to teach. With this information, complete the “Effective Engagement Strategies Toolkit” template. The template will cover the following:  Name and location of video  Description of engagement strategy and how each strategy demonstrates respect and responsiveness for cultural and diverse needs of students  Procedures and expectations of the strategy  How each strategy is described, implemented, and/or evaluated in the classroom Reference Part 2: Effective Engagement Reflection In 250-500 words, summarize and reflect on the following:  What signs would you look for, as a teacher, to show that your students are engaged in instruction?  After explaining the role of each student at the beginning of a lesson for a group activity, how can you ensure all members of the group know each team member’s expectations?  How would you monitor individual student understanding in a small group setting?  How would you describe a learning environment that fosters engagement and motivates students? ELM 510 Topic 2 Assignment: Group Learning Environments Description: Students learn in a variety of settings and environments. Group learning creates an environment of engagement and motivation. It gives students a chance to learn from each other in a cooperative learning setting. Part 1: Classroom Design Based on your own research, select a digital tool or other appropriate strategy to create and design your own classroom. Your design should focus on group and cooperative learning in the classroom environment and include:  The layout of the classroom.  Where the desks/tables will be placed to facilitate group learning.  Where the technology will be located so students with diverse needs have equitable access. Part 2: Group Learning Reflection In 500-750 words, identify effective engagement and motivation strategies that promote student learning and describe how you will incorporate group learning techniques into your future teaching practices. Describe how these techniques will help students understand the classroom expectations and procedures and how to work productively. In your reflection, address:  Grade level, content area, and rationale as to why your classroom design is conducive to group learning.  Description of the classroom setting and focus of the room.  Description of the strategies to foster organization.  How group learning activities help students work productively and promote students’ growth and development.  How to communicate effectively with students with diverse needs, including language barriers and cultural differences.  How you will use these engagement strategies in your future professional practice. ELM 510 Topic 2 Assignment: Clinical Field Experience A – Group Learning Environments Description: Allocate at least 2 hours in the field to support this field experience. Part 1: Observation For this field experience, spend time in an elementary classroom, grade K-8, observing a group learning activity and collaborating with your mentor teacher. Coordinate with your mentor teacher to determine the best time to observe a group learning activity. As you are observing, complete the "Group Learning Environment Technique" template. Part 2: Collaboration Following your observation, collaborate with your mentor teacher to learn more about the group learning techniques implemented in the classroom. Below is a list of questions to discuss: 1. How do you create an environment conducive to group learning activities? 2. What behavior situations arise during group learning activities? 3. How do you deal with behavior situations during group learning activities? 4. How do you set the expectations for group learning activities? 5. What strategies are the most beneficial when managing group learning activities? Ask two additional questions of your own. Part 3: Reflection In 250-500 words, summarize and reflect on your observation and collaboration in your mentor teacher's classroom. Discuss the classroom environment and why it is conducive to group and cooperative learning, expectations, and student engagement. Explain how you will use your findings in your future professional practice. _____________________________________________________________________________________ ELM 510 Topic 3 Assignment: Trauma in Schools Description: This assignment discusses sensitive material pertaining to the teacher and classroom learning environment, while it is not a topic we want to bring to light, it is critical that teachers are prepared and aware of these situations. Traumatic events occur in schools all across the country every day. An important aspect of classroom management is to know how to prepare for trauma and deal with what happens in the classroom and in schools. Trauma can come in many forms including school shooting, lockdown, abuse, students’ parent death, evacuation, etc. or lesser forms of trauma that can still have an effect on students. For this assignment, research a traumatic event that has happened in an elementary school in the past 5 years. Then select a generic event in order to complete this assignment. With the specific traumatic event in mind, choose a grade level (K-2, 3-5, 6-8). Conduct research and use the resources in the topic materials to determine how you would respond to this specific traumatic event and traumatic events in the future. Create an 8-10 slide digital presentation to be presented to the community, teachers in the district, and families. Be sure to take into consideration students' diverse personal and family backgrounds. Your digital presentation should address the following:  Statement of the traumatic event (school shooting, fire, bomb threat, etc.)  How to respond during the traumatic event.  How to respond to students the day after a traumatic event.  How to respond to and address families.  How to prepare students for future traumatic events.  Resources to give families in preparation of traumatic events. ______________________________________________________________________________ ELM 510 Topic 3 Assignment: Clinical Field Experience B – Behavior Expectations / Trauma / Bullying Description: Allocate at least 2 hours in the field to support this field experience. Part 1: Observation Request permission from your mentor teacher to observe another classroom in order to see various classroom management styles. Observe a different grade level or different classroom in the same grade level as in Clinical Field Experience A. Spend your first hour observing how the teacher incorporates group motivation and behavior expectations during instruction and/or group activities. Part 2: Collaboration Use the next hour to interview your mentor teacher about group motivation, how he or she sets behavior expectations, establishes safety procedures, and addresses trauma in the classroom. Below is a list of questions to ask your mentor teacher: 1. How do you develop group motivation during classroom instruction? 2. How do you set your behavior expectations in your classroom? 3. In what ways do you communicate with the parents of your students regarding motivation, expectations, safety procedures, and trauma? 4. How have you dealt with bullying in your classroom? 5. Does your school implement any type of bullying curriculum? If so, describe it. 6. In what ways do you prepare your students for safety in your classroom (fire drill, lockdown, evacuation, trauma, etc.)? 7. What traumatic events (lockdown, evacuation, abuse, students’ family member passed away, etc.) have occurred in your classroom/school while teaching? 8. How did you respond with your students? Ask additional questions and follow-up questions as appropriate. Note: Do not use students' real names mentioned during the interview. Part 3: Reflection In 250-500 words, summarize the interview, and how the teacher responded to bullying, trauma, and safety in the classroom. Reflect on how you will respond to bullying in your future classroom and when and how you will involve parents. What are some ways you can address bullying with the whole class? Research bullying prevention strategies and share two strategies. Explain how you will use your findings in your future professional practice. _____________________________________________________________________________________ ELM 510 Topic 4 Assignment: Classroom Procedures and Diversity Description: Establishing classroom procedures and routines helps to optimize time for instruction and allows the learning environment to operate efficiently.
