Group 0010A Analysis of: “A Study of Kindergarten and First Grade Special Education Students’ Recall of Color Words by Jean Everhart” Theoretical Fundamentals There is no explicit theoreti... cal fundamental that is clearly stated or defined in Everhart (2004). However, the concept of a “multisensory approach” is mentioned repeatedly. Perhaps a connection can be made for the researcher that a theoretical fundamental is assumed based on the purpose, context, and literature review. The researcher states that he/she teaches in a level 2 special education classroom and he/she was in meetings regarding students transitioning and reviewing Individual Education Plans (IEPs). The researcher also states that the transitioning teams include a speech pathologist, occupational therapist, and physical therapist. However, the most telling pattern in the researcher’s context is the term ‘multisensory.’ From these statements and the context it can be gathered the theoretical fundamental of the researcher is a multisensory approach to teaching students with special needs. If an assumption can be made that the theory is a multisensory approach then the methods of approach the researcher uses do make sense. The researcher cites (Pitino, 2002; Conflitti, 1998) researchers who have a multisensory approach of teaching sight words using sign language which is a visual way of teaching and learning. The researcher states the use of finger spelling as a kinesthetic way of learning and teaching which also ties in with a multisensory approach. A clear and stated theoretical fundamental approach is necessary to add professional credibility. It provides the research, the researcher, and reader a common language and fundamental understanding of a philosophical approach. It is a professional approach to a research question that is guided by a foundation. That theoretical foundation must be clearly defined and not left up to the reader to [Show More]
