Professional socialisation has been described as ‘a complex interactive process by which the content of the professional role (skills, knowledge, behaviour) is learned and the values, attitudes an ... d goals [such as concern for patients and a commitment to their well- being] integral to the profession and sense of occupational identity which are characteristic of a member of that profession are internalised’ (Goldenberg & Iwasiw, 1993). It is generally accepted that professional socialisation involves both explicit teaching and informal learning (Davis, 1975) as well as less comfortable features and subtly coercive practices (Apker & Eggly, 2004). The study of institutional talk has a long history, and in particular, studies of medical work and identity (Atkinson, 1995; Atkinson & Heath, 1981). Much of this work focuses on doctor-patient interactions e.g. (Drew & Heritage, 1992). A small number of studies focus on the discursive aspects of identity formation among the healthcare professions. For example, Frost and Regehr describe how Canadian medical students construct identity in the context of a tension between prevailing discourses of individuality and standardisation in medicine (Frost & Regehr, 2013).
