Describe the reasons why depression may be under diagnosed in older adults
o Most of the time they are seeking mental health services by their primary care physician
o Link it to just normal aging
o Tricky in terms of depression can be wrongly diagnosed
Identify the settings where depression may be more prevalent in later adulthood
o Physiological factors:
- Neurological issues
- Ex: Alzheimer’s; other types of depression
- Lesions in the brain
- Alzheimer’s first response is depression
- Insufficient supplies of neurotransmitters:
- Evidence: symptoms respond to meds
- Antidepressant drugs restore chemical balance
- Strong biological basis
o Psychosocial factors:
- Stressful events, loss and cognitive styles
- Loss of loved one; negative view of the world
Describe & distinguish between physiological and social causes of late life depression
- Psychosocial symptoms: sadness, lack of interest, inactivity, pessimism, low self-esteem,
anxiety, crying, fear, etc.
- Physical symptoms: loss of appetite, low energy and sleep disturbance
Describe depression treatments, including types of psychotherapy and drug treatments
- Psychotherapy is usually effective with older patients
- Psychotherapeutic interventions help with older adults
- Cognitive therapy: alters maladaptive thoughts
- Behavior therapy: changes activities to modify mood
- Lack of positive reinforcement
- Therapy more effective than medication alone
- Just therapy isn’t enough but just meds isn’t enough
- You want to make sure its minimal intervention, do not do anything crazy, just enough to help.
Focus on the here and the now.

o Suicide does go up for men above the age of 45
o Most common cause is depression

o Older adults commit suicide at higher rates than any other age group
