1- Review the article Defining and Measuring Chronic Conditions. From what
you learned from this article, how can you define chronic conditions,
diseases, illness? Can you provide a summary (between 5-7 sentences) of
what you understood from the article?
From the beginning of the article I understood that the authors are trying to inform
the public of the rise of chronic diseases and conditions. Without giving a specific
definition, I understood that chronic disease includes recurrent and and persistent
health problems that last for long periods of time (months and years). Chronic
conditions include permanent health problems, development disorder, visual
impairment, and more that do not come from a Physical disease. The article
introduces specific Health Data Systems that can be used to monitor the increase of
chronic disease and conditions. As people suffering from those need more access to
primary care to live a better quality of life.
2- Google search for Acute and Chronic disease definition, copy the definitions
and compare, and provide the website links.
Acute diseases are severe and sudden, symptoms appear and change or
worsen rapidly, from a broken bone to a heart attack.
Chronic diseases develop and worsen over an extended period of time,
symptoms are long developing, from diabetes to cancer.
3- Why are Chronic Diseases important? Please list and explain
Chronic Diseases are important to study and try to decrease the percentage in the
U.S because as of 2012 at least half of all adults (117 million) had one or more
chronic health disease. A huge reason to try to expand treatment for chronic disease
is because seven out of the ten causes of death were chronic diseases. Heart Disease
and Cancer accounted for 48% of all deaths. Half of deaths result from this disease.
This is so so important in studying.
4- What are the risk factors for Chronic Diseases?
Heart Disease being the leading cause of death. In a 2011 study it was proven that
more than half of adults over the age of 18 did not meet recommended physical
activity, which after a long period of time causes heart problems. More than 42
million adults, close to 1 out of 5 people smoke cigarettes which contributes to the
second leading cause of death, cancer.
5- What are the CDC recommendations to prevent chronic diseases? List and
explain.
Monitor social policies that affect chronic disease, such as changing the legal
smoking and drinking age. Design communities with more parks and trails that can
help the public have an easy way to work out and be outdoors. Input afterschool
programs after school that give tips on how to stay healthy, as well as free screenings
for disease or for example breast cancer screenings.
6- Provide a summary paragraph (between 5-7 sentences) for a takeaway
message from the chronic disease overview and the 2 prevention articles.
