The course focuses on the development of nursing as a profession, current and evolving issues and trends in nursing and the health care delivery system, and the impact these have upon professional nursing practice. The role of the professional nurse in a contemporary and global society will be explored to assist students in establishing their identity with the nursing profession. (Offered Fall, Spring) 2 credits COURSE OBJECTIVES 1. Describe the evolution of the health care delivery system as the context for the organization and provision of health care services. 2. Identify economic, legal, political and ethical issues that can affect the health care environment. 3. Define the roles of the varied members of the interdisciplinary health care team. 4. Discuss the contemporary role of the professional nurse as it has evolved historically. 5. Discuss the education of the professional nurse as it has evolved. 6. Identify practice regulations and standards to promote competent patient-centered care. 7. Discuss various concepts impacting professional nursing practice within an evolving society. 8.
