SOCS-350N Week 3 Assignment: Essay – What Would You Do cultures, religious preferences and ethnicity.Having knowledge about a person’s background in nursing care is critical. Colleen M. Galamb... os states that the United States is experiencing a shift in demographic trends, including an increase in cultural diversity. In the next two decades ethnic minorities will account for about 40 percent of the population by 2025. Healthcare professionals must understand that addressing cultural diversity goes more than knowing the values and beliefs of every patient. Cultural Differences can have a negative impact on our patients' care such as access to healthcare effective treatment, and accurate diagnosis. According Laurence J Kirmayer, clinical attention to and respect for culture differences can provide experiences of recognition that increase trust in and commitment to the institutions of the larger society (Kirmayer, 2011). For this week’s assignment I chose the scenario that involves a female Muslim patient who refuses care from a qualified male nurse. She also refuses to explain why she is requesting a different caregiver. I will analyze the five key attributes which are communication, flexibility, integrity, ethical behavior, and critical thinking skills. Communication As we all know, good communication between nurses and patients is essential to individualized care. Effective communication improves nurse-patient relationships. According to the Kourkouta & Papathanasiou, “communication in nursing is a vital element in nursing in all areas of activity and in all its interventions, such as prevention, treatment, therapy, rehabilitation, education, and health promotion (Kourkouta& Papathanasiou, 2014). A lack of communication between a nurse and a patient can be detrimental in the outcome of their treatment. Based on the scenario mentioned in my first paragraph, the Muslim female patient refused to let the male nurse care for heros a good example on lack of communication. First of all, the patient has the right to refuse care and she can request to have a different nurse. Perhaps one of the main reasons why the patient rejected the male nurse was because of her cultural values. Attum, Hafiz & Malik, states that in order to provide high quality care to patients of the Muslim faith a nurse must undertsand the differences between cultural and spiritual values. They should follow certain guidelines. Importance differences also include diet and modesty. Also, when meeting a patient for the first time it is important to remember the method that we use to communicate is clear to avoid misunderstandings. Flexibility Flexibility is essential to succeed as a nurse. When we are constaltly adapting to changes, we can make better decisions when managing patient care. In this scenario, the male nurse has a challenging situation. As a qualified nurse, he needs to ensure that the patients receive high- quality care and be flexible to any change that needs to be made; in this case, finding another nurse. Integrity An attribute that helps nurses to make ethical decisions is integrity. John Saultz states that integrity is built by individuals' acts of moral rectitude and is spread by example (Saultz, 2019). In this scenario, in order to build a better relationship between the patient and the nurse. The nurse must respect the patient’s wishes and also assured her that her cultural values and religious beliefs would be respected while receiving any medical treatment. Ethical Behavior Ethical behavior involves “demonstrating respect for key moral principles that include honesty, fairness, equality, dignity, diversity and individual rights. According to Verma, ethical behavior leads to commitment and the committed people work with passion and can transfer and ignite energy that motivates them and others to act (Verma, 2011). To address the dilemma presented in this scenario, the nurse must respect the cultural values of the patient. Critical Thinking Skills As I mentioned in my last assignment, critical thinking refers to skills that allow a person to make informed and logical decisions to their ability. To resolve the problem mentioned in this scenario, the nurse must analyze the situation to see how he can help the patient in the best way. Perhaps talking to his manager to establish a solution and obtain feedback can also be a possibility. Having critical thinking skills would help this nurse to find a resolution to this matter. I believe that by following these five key attributes the patient will have positive outcomes in her medical treatment. Effective communication strained relationships.Flexibility is essential to find success, Integrity can help us to find our own personal boundaries and show respect. Respecting the patient’s wishes and letting another nurse attend her medical needs is the best decision that this nurse can make. References Attum B, Hafiz S, Malik A, et al.
