RN ATI Capstone Content Review: Nursing Care of Children Post-Assessment Focused, Individualized Review Assignment 1. The nurse is teaching the parents of an infant with tonsillitis caused by group A ... ß- hemolytic streptococci about the importance of compliance with antibiotic therapy. What teaching regarding this infection is important to share with the parents? Tonsillitis is inflammation of the pharyngeal tonsils. The inflammation usually extends to the adenoid and the lingual tonsils thus the term pharyngitis may also be used. Most cases of bacterial tonsillitis are caused by group A beta-hemolytic Streptococcus pyogenes (GABHS). It is important that parent teaching regarding this infection include the etiologic agent which is a bacteria and antibiotic is needed for treatment. The antibiotic treatment of choice is penicillin. It is important for the nurse to be aware of allergies. Moreover, the nurse should also inform parents about side effects and adverse effects of the antibiotic prescribed and most especially that antibiotics should be administered for the full course of the treatment even if the child has started feeling well. 2. What are three (3) points the nurse should educate the parents of an epileptic client on regarding seizure medications? 1. An accurate diagnosis of the type of epilepsy (not just the type of seizure, because most seizure types occur in different types of epilepsy) a person has is very important in choosing the best treatment. The type of medication prescribed will also depend on several factors specific to each patient such as age, side effects that can be tolerated, other illnesses and which delivery method is acceptable. A single medication is initiated at a low dosage and gradually increased until seizures are controlled. A second medication can be added to achieve seizure control. 2. Parents should also be informed about complications of seizure medications such as CNS effects sleepiness or drowsiness, dizziness, and other side effects and adverse effects of these medications. 3. Inform parents that medications should be taken at the same time every day to augment effectualness. It is imperative for parents to know medication and food interactions which are specific to these medications. Additionally, teach parents that dosage changes/increase might be needed as the child grows and that urinalysis, liver function tests, and blood cell counts will be acquired and needed at frequent intervals to ascertain the effect of these medications on organ function.
