NURSING C228 Task 2 Application of Community Health Outbreak. Western Governors University.Application of Community Health Outbreak A. Description of Outbreak The outbreak I’m going to discuss in ... this paper is the 2015 Disney land Measles outbreak. According to the CDC the Public Health Department in California was notified of an eleven-year-old child who presented with an onset of a rash on January fifth of 2015. This child had not been vaccinated for the measles. The child had not traveled outside of the county, but the child had been to Disney land in Orange County California. That was the first notification, on that same day California’s Public Health Department received four more reports of suspected measles. They also received two reports in Utah. All the infected people reported visiting Disney in the month of December from the seventeenth to the twentieth. By January seventh California confirmed seven cases of measles. Those were just the first reports, seven other states in the United States also reported a total of fifteen cases to the CDC. The reports were not just in the United States. Mexico reported one case, and Canada reported ten cases. All cases of infected people had visited Disneyland around the same time[Jen17]. The graph above shows the 110 confirmed measles cases by date of rash onset in California from December 2014 to February 2015 [Jen17]. Measles is a very contagious viral disease. As you can see by looking at the graph the rash onset does not hit the infected person right away. The first signs and symptoms are cough, fever, runny nose, and conjunctivitis. These symptoms last several days before the onset of the rash. Measles is transmitted through the air by an infected person coughing or sneezing. The virus can live on surfaces for up to two hours and in the air[CDC17]. Making Disney the perfect venue for the virus to spread to many people who are not vaccinated for the measles. [Show More]
