Unit 1: What Is Nursing Informatics - Entire Class's Discussion Posts Unit 1: What Is Nursing Informatics? 21 Discuss ways that nursing informatics could be applied to all areas of professional nur ... sing practice, including clinical practice, administration, education, and research. Provide examples of each. What do you see as the biggest significance of nursing informatics, and why? (CO 1,4,5,7,8) Marissa Dopp Hello Class, I look forward to this week's discussion focused on what is nursing informatics. Please be sure to address how nursing informatics could be applied to clinical practice, administration, education, and research. As a reminder: You are required to post a minimum of two substantive posts in each graded discussion. These two posts must be on 2 separate days. The first post in each graded discussion must be completed by Wednesday, 11:59 p.m. Mountain Time (MT). Week 1-7 discussions must be completed by the end of week, Sunday, 11:59 p.m. Mountain Time (MT). For credit, you can start posting on Sunday of each week. For weekly discussions, please do NOT use quotes. Information should be paraphrased with an in-text citation. Quotes should be used in rare situations. Hope everyone has a great week! Nursing informatics is composed of nursing science, computer science and information science (HIMMS, 2019). To be a successful nurse, effective communication is key. Nursing informatics could be applied to all areas of professional nursing practice such as clinical practice, administration, education and research. A registered nurse working in a clinical setting uses informatics daily. For example, the use of electronic health records (EHR), and electronic medical records (EMR) is a form of information technology that nurses use to document patient information. They also use Telehealth and EHR’s to communicate with other health care team members (ATI Community Health Nursing, 2016). A nurse who works in an administrative setting will use databases, billing systems, spreadsheets, and software applications (ATI Community Health Nursing, 2016). They use technology to generate reports such as history of falls or hospital acquired infections within a unit. They can also use informatics to keep track of nurse-to-patient ratios, staff-schedule, and upcoming events such as meetings etc. A nurse educator uses technology when conducting an online course, and can communicate with students via E-mail. Nurse educators who work in a hospital setting can hold meetings electronically, use chat-rooms, and conduct orientations/training with the use of technology (ATI Community Health Nursing, 2016). At Chamberlain College of Nursing, professors utilize the simulation lab and use technology to aid the students perform real life scenarios. Nurse researchers use informatics to obtain and collect data for research purposes. They use computers and smartphones to access the internet (ATI Community Health Nursing, 2016). In addition, they might look at electronic health records and/or charting to gather data. Evidenced based research is made easier using modern technology. This week’s lesson, Introduction to Nursing Informatics explains that when healthcare providers have access to up-to date patient notes and charting they make better decisions and improve individualized patient care. The biggest significance of nursing informatics is that it allows patient data to be collected and documented in an organized matter. I believe nursing informatics helps decrease medical errors. Looking back at paper-charting, the use of technology facilitates how nurses, physicians and other health care team members communicate and exchange information that is clear and precise. As a result, nursing informatics and the use of technology has improved how nurses deliver care to their patients. -Stephanie Pontious References: Chamberlain College of Nursing. Your post was very organized! EHRs are very beneficial in the aspect of communication. EHRs have offered an increased amount of awareness and clinical understanding and in turn less mistakes due to adequate data (Chase et al., 2014). Class, Do you have experience with paper charting in your professional practice? If so, can you provide pros and cons that you have directly observed? Dr. Dopp Chase, D. A., Ash, J. S., Cohen, D.
