BSCI 207 GAE 5: Animal development Group members: Bei Chang, Amirali Atarod, Joshua Rich, Anish Seem, Eileen Flama A. Identifying key developmental signals and genes You have developed a lab cultu... re system for a fast-growing animal, the crested jubjub. Crested jubjub embryos normally begin to develop a crest about half way through development, like this: The crest seems to develop from a localized zone of unusually rapid cell proliferation. You are curious how the crest forms. In particular you want to know if one particular cell is predetermined to form the crest or if any cell can become the crest if it got the right signals from the cells around it. So you do some experiments. Experiment 1: When the embryo has 16 cells, you remove the cell whose descendants would normally form the crest. Possible Result A: Nothing happens—the crest still forms. What might that say about the potential of different cells to make the crest? What do you think is going on in the embryo? If the crest still forms, the cell is sufficient but not necessary. This tells us that when this cell is removed, other cells are also able to make the crest. This may be due to cell-to-cell signaling [Show More]
