You need to read the following parts of this paper (+ the tables discussed below): pp. 3565 – 3575; 3583-4; 3597-8 (Introduction, section I, part of section III, Conclusion). For the next set of questions read the Introduction (pp,3565-9).  Is hiring costly? Why might firms hire inefficiently low numbers of entry-level workers? If a worker is hired, why and how could she compensate the firm for hiring her? What prevents this from taking place?  Why might firms underinvest in general skills training? How is public information about a worker’s abilities or skills like general training? (p.3567)  What institutions or policies might improve the incentives to invest in general training or provision of information about entry-level workers’ skills? (p.3568)2  What is a ‘field experiment’? Describe the nature of the experiment the author undertakes. Who are the individuas who will form the experimental sample? Decsribe the two treatment arms and one control arm of the experiement.  What kind of data does the author have access to? How will she undertake the analysis? Summarise the main results of the experiment.  What are the possible interpretations of the findings?  What is the impact of the experiment on ‘total market surplus’?  What is the advantage of this study relative to other studies which analyse whether programs that help young and disadvantaged workers enter the labor market can improve their long-term outcomes? Make sure you understand the context and the nature of the oDesk business model.  Explain the Experimental Design in Figure 2.  Explain what is going on in Tables 1 and 2. Read pp.3583-6. We will discuss Table 3 in detail.  Look at the ‘Any job’ row. Who is in the ‘Control’ group? What can you say about job prospects for workers with and without experience in the Control group?  What is the impact of the experiment on the ‘Any job’ outcome for workers with and without experience?
