Introduction
The purpose of the Bean Sprout experiment was to examine how different
variables can affect the germination rate of seeds. From previous studies, my group and
I knew that various variables such as water, sunlight salinity, temperature, seed depth,
humidity, viability of seed, space, dormant seed period, and the thickness of a seed coat
would affect the germination rate of seeds. Out of those ten variables, three variables
were used in the experiment. These variables were salinity, temperature, and sunlight.
The hypothesis for the first variable was that increased amounts of salinity would
decrease the germination rate of the bean sprout seed. For the second variable, the
hypothesis was that higher temperatures would increase the germination rate of the
seeds. Lastly, the hypothesis for the third variable was that increased amounts of
sunlight would also increase the germination rate of seeds.
Materials
10 5X8 bags
Ruler
Permanent Marker
100 Beans
Paper Towels
Tap Water
Salt
Method
To test whether increased amounts of salinity affect the germination of seeds,
three different percentages of salt were added into three different bags of ten seeds. Ten
seeds were placed horizontally on a paper towel and each of the three bags received the
same amount of water. The percentages of salt that were added were 5%, 10%, and
15%. The independent variable in this experiment was salinity and the dependent
variable was germination rate. The control for this experiment was an identical bag
without any added salt. For the second test the variable temperature was analyzed to
determine if increased amounts of temperature affected germination. Three bags with
ten seeds were placed horizontally and received the same amount and were placed in
three different locations. The locations were near a window sill, near an air vent, and
lastly in the middle of a room. The independent variable in this experiment was the
change in temperature and the dependent variable was the germination rate. The final
variable that was tested was sunlight. Three bags that had 10 seeds in them each and
received the same amount of water but were placed in different areas were analyzed.
The three areas were outside, in a dark room, and in a room with an electric light. The
