Reflection Paper: Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Help for an Eating Disorder: The Role of Stigma and Anticipated Outcomes It is important to understand the reasons why men and women avoid loo ... king for help when they experience symptoms related to eating disorders. Eating disorders should not be something negative instead, it is critical to speak with positivity to let people know they are not alone. The study demonstrates that people do not seek professional help because of several psychological factors, including self-stigma. The stigma which occurs with eating disorder lowers the quality of life in the individual which as a result it lowers their self-esteem. By having lower self-esteem, it creates an idea that the individual will not find proper help and support. The fact that participants were chosen by their psychology classes by meeting the criteria of an eating disorder makes the study not as effective. The study would have been more effective if the students decided to be part of it on their own will. Even though the participation was voluntary, the participants obtained two credit points in their class. What is strong about this study is that it used people who currently experience unhealthy behaviors and attitudes which is a consequence of eating disorders. For a person to reduce their attitude towards their eating disorder, they may be treated by psychotherapy or nutritional counseling. That is why it is important for people who portray unhealthy behaviors or attitudes to have personal goals, for example, to be healthy enough to see their children grow or to travel. Personal goals help to be focused on what is important, it allows them to measure how far they have come and most importantly it is a way to stay motivated. The current sample is not very broad, it focuses only on psychology students and no other types of students.
