Source music is music that the characters in the movie can hear.
● There is American music playing when you enter Rick’s cafe. The source music tells you that the cafe is American, where as in the Blue Parrot cafe, they are playing Middle Eastern music. It also shows you escapism
● Two patriotic songs (German and French) were play during the confrontation of the German and French. This shows you the intense conflict between the two.
● The most important source song was “As Time Goes By.” Steiner was going to use an original tune he made but he was not able to reshoot the scene so he kept it.
3) Discuss the growth of the various types of popular music in films from the late 1940’s (1944 and after) through the 1950’s. Mention landmark films, style, and the composers when you can.
