. Describe bone tissue and the role each component plays in bone physiology and remodeling. What is the difference between compact and spongy bone? (2 points) There are two types of bone tissue: co... rtical bone and cancellous bone. Cortical bone is synonymous with compact bone, and cancellous bone is synonymous with trabecular and spongy bone. Cortical bone forms the extremely hard exterior while cancellous bone fills the hollow interior. Cortical bone(compact bone) is dense and solid and surrounds the marrow space, whereas trabecular bone(spongy bone) is composed of a honeycomb-like network of trabecular plates and rods interspersed in the bone marrow compartment. Both cortical and trabecular bones are composed of osteons. Bone undergoes longitudinal and radial growth, modeling, and remodeling during life. Longitudinal and radial growth during growth and development occurs during childhood and adolescence. Longitudinal growth occurs at the growth plates, where cartilage proliferates in the epiphyseal and metaphyseal areas of long bones. Modeling is the process by which bones change their overall shape in response to physiologic influences or mechanical forces, leading to gradual adjustment of the skeleton to the forces that it encounters. Bone remodeling is the process by which bone is renewed to maintain bone strength and mineral homeostasis [Show More]
