Mohammed Abdelrehem March 19, 2019 Professor Zdarvkovic CHEM 121 Solubility Lab Report Purpose: The purpose of this lab was to be able to determine whether or not certain organic compounds were ... soluble in water. When soluble we would see the water and the compound become one. However, when insoluble we would see bubbles, fizz, and a layer of what we added just sitting on top of the water. Sometimes the fizz just means a reaction is happening, you have to look out for the layer. This lab allowed us to see which organic compounds were soluble and which were not. Chemicals & Equipment: Small Test tubes Water 3M NaOH 3 M HCl Organic Compounds: hexane, 1-butanol, isobutanol, tert-butanol, 1-pentanol, diethyl ether, dimethoxyethane, methyl propyl ketone, ethyl propionate, pentanoic acid, triethylamine Summary Procedure: Using a test tube rack and small test tubes you can set up the experiment by adding approximately 3 mL of water to each test tube. Each test tube will be used for a different organic compound. Using tape label all the test tubes to differentiate between the compounds being used. Start off with any compound you like take hexane for example and start dropping it into the test [Show More]
