LP5 Assignment: Feral Children
The documentary Wild Child: The Story of Feral Children told us of some cases of abandon
children raised by animals and of one child named Genie who was raised in isolation. The
children grew up with little to no human contact, and therefore was unaware of human social
behavior or language. They were a product of their environment, abandon by their parents and
other social contacts at a very young age. Feral children lack the awareness of social norms that
we are accustomed too.
Victor was raised in the wild and was found at eleven years old. Victor had no human contact,
so he most likely gotten his social skills from animals. Because of being raised in the wild and
having no human contact Victor lacked normal human feelings like empathy. He also couldn’t
speak like normal 11-year-old.
Genie was held in isolation from her family and the outside world for thirteen years by her
father. When she was found she was underweight and had the physical appearance of a 6 or 7-
year-old. Genie was also still wearing diapers which normally young people can use the toilet by
themselves around age 3. Normally at the age of 13 you can interact with others socially but
because Genie was isolated for many years she didn’t have any social skills. Genie also was
developed abnormally physically because of what she went through. Genie was tied to an potty
chair for long periods of time and because of this her motor skills was neglected, and she
couldn’t walk properly. At the age of 13 young people or able to walk standing up straight or sit
straight up.
