-thoracic injuries  Involves Chest wall, lungs, heart great vessels  20-25% of trauma deaths  70% of MVCs result in thoracic injury o seat belt o hitting steering wheel  can have inj... ury to spine - tracheobronchial trauma o ruptured bronchi with upper rib fracture and pneumothorax o airways injury is subtle o S/S  Hemoptysis  Cough crepitus  Anxiety  Hoarseness  Stridor  Air hunger  Use of accessory muscle  Retractions  Hypoventilation  Diaphragm breathing  Apnea, cyanosis – late signs  If HgB normal, they wont present with cyanosis (no blue finger tips or lips)  Consider persistent air leak with pneumothorax - bony thorax o intrathoaracic/ abd inuries o significant pain o causes pulm deterioration o common injuries with thoracic injuries  pnuemo, hemothoax, pulm contusion  liver and spleen most commonly affected in abd - rib fracture o Most common type of chest injury o Fractures of 1-2 are HIGH IMPACT  Injures lungs, aortic arch and verterbral column o Fractures of 3-9 are BLUNT TRAUMA  Lung injury o 7-12 – LIVER TEARS/ abd injury o Common problems – control pain first [Show More]
