Democracy was still growing i... n the late 18th and early 19th centuries 1. Many people voted, citizens made public demonstrations (speeches), and criticized the government II. The Missouri Crisis A. American politics was divided btwn the North, South, and West 1. Since 1789, VA had a lot of influence on the gov’t a) ⅘ first presidents from VA 2. Then, immigration caused population boom in northern states 3. Gradualism in the North vs deeper dependence on slavery in the South B. When white settlers in Missouri applied for statehood, the balance btwn Northern and Southern states was threatened 1. MO had many slaves and was ready to join the south in Congress 2. Tallmadge Amendment: Congress should only admit MO as a state if slaves’ children were freed at 25 & no more slaves would be allowed in a) Passed in HOR but defeated in the Senate b) Jesse Thomas + Henry Clay proposed a compromise (1) Congress would admit Missouri as a slave state (2) Congress would admit Main (which was at this time part of MA) as a free state) (3) The rest of the Louisiana territory would be divided along the southern border of MO; slavery allowed south of it, not north C.
