Reformers tackled alcoholism, slavery, inequality of women II. Revival and Religious Change A. Second great awakening: revivalist preachers traveled across the country, sharing the message of spiritual and moral renewal + evangelical conversion B. Increased church membership & inspired social reform C. Cane Ridge Revival: One of the earliest and largest revivals in Cane Ridge, Kentucky; ~1 week 1. Women exhorted too 2. Methodist, Baptist, and Presbyterian preachers told the crowd to strive for their own salvation D. Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian denominations gained popularity 1. Methodism was the most popular by 1850 a) After breaking from the Church of England, the Methodist Episcopal Church (MEC) grew through innovation b) Itinerant preachers (a.k.a circuit riders): converted by pushing west over the Alleghenies and into the Ohio River Valley E. Spiritual Egalitarianism: all souls are equal in salvation and all ppl can be saved by surrendering to God 1. Orthodox Calvinism became too pessimistic a) Spiritual leaders appealed to worshippers’ emotions & appealed to younger generations thru less orthodox Calvinism 2. Emphasis on spiritual egalitarianism over formal training to preach gave Methodists the upper hand (more preachers + they had to be paid less) F.
