Playsight offers nonprofessional athletes’ access to player training & development technology which had previously been restricted to professional sports people by installing artificial intelligence software and connected camera technology on courts, gyms and fields. Once installed, their “Smartcourt” software provides a variety of services and benefits to athletes, coaches, teams, and fans. These benefits range from automatic production broadcasting and advanced coaching tools to Video assisted refereeing and a content platform to store, manage and share video, statistics, and analytics. The technology uses image processing and analytical algorithms to track strokes/shots, ball trajectory, player movement and shot speed and spin. Their cloud-based platform allows users to share sports data, stream live games and stores all video from Smartcourt sessions enabling coaches and players to review later from a web enabled device. Playsight market their technology to 24 sports but specifically target tennis & recently basketball. Playsight’s online platform empowers teams’ revenue generation via subscriptions and live streaming fees. Playsight technology could transform how sports are coached, played, and consumed; thus, delivering both rapid and highly profitable growth to its shareholders. The Sports broadcasting market has performed poorly in recent years with subscriber numbers declining by an average of 8.5M (Business Insider) over the last 6 years. The growth in internet technology and Wi-fi penetration has led to a shift away from cable/ satellite tv towards Over the Top (OTT) media. Overall interest and participation in sporting activities has remained flat. Currently, only professional athletes have access to sophisticated video and analytics technologies. Regular/ mass market athletes can’t afford the high cost of installation and maintenance that high-level sportspeople and professional organisations can absorb. This hinders amateur athletes and coach’s pursuit of improvement and suppresses the productivity of their training sessions and coaching methods. Though, pros can analyse video replays and advanced statistics, amateurs are unable to identify performance flaws through AI analytics and must accept generic coaching and untargeted training. Amateur teams who desire player statistics must employ record keepers resulting in additional costs and time inefficiency. Lack of video footage also hampers officiating standards and sportsmanship and often leads to incorrect decision making and unfair results. Broadcasters presently show major sporting events and top sports teams.
