Rasmussen College - G150/PHA 1500Mrivera_Module02: Exploration Assignment on Osteoporosis. Graded A. No Plagiarism Osteoporosis affects millions of people in the United States; it is a bone disease... that they either already have, or are already at high risk for it. Osteoporosis causes a person’s bones to become weak and brittle; this tends to happen as we age (“Osteoporosis Fast Facts”, 2014). Our bones are considered living tissues, they are constantly being broken down and replaced, but when osteoporosis occurs, the build up of new bone cannot keep up with the amount bone being broken down. Osteoporosis means “porous bone” when under a microscope it looks like a honeycomb, but the holes and spaces are much larger than a healthy bone. When Osteoporosis occurs, the bones have lost their density and are more likely to break (“Osteoporosis Fast Facts”, 2014).When the bones are weak and brittle, they are prone to breaking from a fall to something smaller such as coughing or sneezing.
