Objectives Ch1 Ch 4_The Cell Altered Cells and tissues

Document Content and Description Below

Chapter 01: Cellular Biology This chapter covers many basics of cell biology that are prerequisite for the course and that you should have already covered and learned from your previous courses (mo... st likely, you already know them). Please go through these and make sure you have a general understanding of each. Learning Objectives After reviewing this chapter, the learner will be able to do the following: 1. Compare and contrast prokaryotes and eukaryotes.  eukaryotic cell consists of three general components: the plasma membrane, the cytoplasm, and the intracellular organelles.  Eukaryotic cells contain membrane-bound organelles, such as the nucleus, while prokaryotic cells do not. Differences in cellular structure of prokaryotes and eukaryotes include the presence of mitochondria and chloroplasts, the cell wall, and the structure of chromosomal DNA. 2. Identify the eight specialized functions of a cell.  movement, conductivity, metabolic absorption, secretion, excretion, respiration, reproduction, and communication 3. Discuss the functions of the principal cytoplasmic organelles. 4. Discuss the plasma membrane addressing both structural and functional aspects.  plasma membrane encloses the cell and, by controlling the movement of substances across it, exerts a powerful influence on metabolic pathways. Principles of membrane structure are being overhauled.  Functional: surrounds organelle, control the composition of space, control metabolic pathways in/out of cell, cell to cell recognition.  Structural: helps with fluid and electrolyte balance -protection, storage, cell to cell interaction, outer surface contains areolae that serve as storage site for many receptors, activation of cell-hormones (reg. of cell activity), mitogens (cellular division), antigens (antibody synthesis), growth factors (proliferation & differentiation) *lipids within are responsible for structural integrity of membrane* 5. Discuss the impo [Show More]
