Course Description
NRSE 4530, Family Nursing, focuses on the role of the family health nurse. This course will review
family theory, role of the family health nurse in the in-patient setting and out-patient setting as a
community health nurse.
Course Topics
There are five (5) modules in this course. Each module represents one week of activity.
1. Introduction to Family Healthcare Nursing
2. Societal and Cultural Issues
3. Family Nursing Roles
4. Family Nursing Across the Lifespan
5. Family Nursing in Specialty Areas
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Apply health appraisal skills while working with families
2. Conduct a family wellness plan
3. Facilitate patient-centered/family-centered transitions of care, including discharge planning, to
ensure the caregiver's ability to promote safe care
4. Discuss research and evidence for practice related to family and family health topics
5. Discuss family spiritual beliefs and values and how those beliefs and values impact health care
relationships
6. Recognize the relationship of genetics and genomics to health, prevention, screening, diagnostics,
prognostics, selection and monitoring of treatment, using a constructed pedigree
