IFICATION: Antihistamines PROTOTYPE: Antihistamines SAFE DOSE OR DOSE RANGE, SAFE ROUTE: PO 25mg to 300mg IV/IM 10mg to 400mg PURPOSE FOR TAKING THIS MEDICATION: • Seasonal rhinitis • Allergic conjunctivitis • Urticaria • Angioedema • Motion sickness • Parkinsonism • Nighttime sleep aid • Cough PATIENT EDUCATION WHILE TAKING THIS MEDICATION: • Instruct patient to take diphenhydramine at least 30 minutes before exposure to situations that may cause motion sickness. • Advise her to take drug with food to minimize GI distress. • Urge patient to avoid alcohol while taking diphenhydramine. • Instruct patient to use sunscreen to prevent photosensitivity reactions. • Advise patient to avoid taking other OTC drugs that contain diphenhydramine to prevent additive effects. ADVERSE EFFECTS • Drowsiness • Sedation • Dizziness • Epigastric distress • Thickening of bronchial secretions • Urinary frequency • Rash • Bradycardia CONTRAINDICATIONS • Pregnancy or lactation • Renal impairment [Show More]
