Introduction. SOCW 6051: Diversity, Human Rights and Social Justice Week 10 My name is Shanell Smart and the community event I attended for this assignment was the LGBTQ+/Transgender Proficiency T... raining. ◦ Describe the cultural event in which you participated: The event I attended took place on 7-28-2020 via zoom. This training was 2.5 hour and a very interactive training which provided the few participates with a more inclusive perspective of the entire LGBTQ+ community, including a more in depth understanding of transgender individuals. I learned about the gender spectrum, gender identity, as well as the history and life experiences of transgender individuals withing the community. This training also went into details about the population more effectively and help me by gaining an understanding of the transgender community. This training shared that before the 1970s, most stereotypes about the LGBTQ community were very negative. In fact, much for much of the 19th and 20th centuries, believed that members of the LGBTQ community suffered from mental disorders. We learned the different discriminations within the LGBTQ community such as abuse both physically and verbally, being excluded from social, professional and events and activities. Unfair treatment by coworkers and employers and bullying. ◦ Explain how this experience influenced your perception of diversity and difference: Attending this training was full of mixed emotions. I don’t think my perception of gay people has ever changed since growing up. I’ve always been accepting of the LGBTQ community because of where I was raised and the people I was around. The community I was raised practically my entire life was always a diverse group of people. I do believe my level of respect for the LGBTQ community has changed throughout the years and especially taking this training.
