Chapter 1 1. What is unusual about part of Sophie’s clothes? Why does the author slip it into the text so casually? (page 7) Sophie's clothes were unusual because they were not nice clothes and s... eemed to be home made and worn often. I think the author put this in to show here innocents and childish curiosity. 2. Explain the paragraph I hesitated, but childhood..... I turned around. (page 9) David is not allowed to see that she has six toes because Sophie has six toes and anyone with a defect is not allowed to live. 3. Explain the section that begins with "Oh, my poor darling!" and ends with, “And so on again (page 11) Why do these religious rules mean little to David? I think these religious rules mean so little too David because he has seen who Sophie is. He sees that she is a sweet and caring girl just like any other kid. David does not see how a normal child could be hateful in the sight of god. 4. On page 11 it is said that David “was the one regrettable and unreliable factor in an otherwise orderly life”. What is meant by that and what does it tell you about David’s home life? How does it contrast with Sophie’s childhood? In David’s home he feels like an outcast and someone that does not belong in the family, but the way Sophie's parents treat here is nothing like David’s parents treat him. He sees that Sophie's family loves and cares so much for Sophie where David feels like his family sees him as an unreliable factor in their orderly life. 5. On page 12 it says: “There was a pause- at least, her voice paused, but her thoughts went on,...”What is revealed in that paragraph and why does the author do it so casually? In this paragraph it is showing that Mrs Wender stopped her words and had so many thoughts swirling in her head. It also shows how David can Read emotions so well.
