Synchronous Machines on Infinite Bus Bars ELEC3130 – Electric Machines & Power Systems Greg Campbell 3067676 Dallas Edwards 3067855 Calvin Ching 3119231 Date: 24th September, 2010 1 Introdu ... ction The objective of this experiment is to investigate the general procedure for synchronising two 3-phase supplies in order to successfully connect them in parallel. The effects and implications of both ideal and non-ideal synchronisation circumstances (particularly the machine voltage & phase angle) are also observed. Furthermore, the effects of varying the excitation at a constant power, P , is investigated through the relationship between the field current and the load current. If the machine is connected to an infinite bus bar system, then it is expected that the armature current will vary as the excitation is varied; passing through a minimum value at unity power factor. 2 System Diagram The circuit diagram of the laboratory experimental system is shown below: Greg Campbell – 3067676 | Dallas Edwards – 3067855 | Calvin Ching - 3119231 1 of 11ELEC3130 LABORATORY 4 [SYNCHRONOUS MACHINES ON INFINITE BUS BARS] 3 Background Information The synchronous generators in this experiment use a cylindrical rotor which carries the excitation winding, with the armature winding on the stator, and are driven by D.C. motors (simulating a prime-mover which would typically be steam, wind, etc.) [Show More]
