Report for Experiment #18 R-C Circuits Cassie Ng Lab Partner: Xiangzhou Kong TA: Maksim Piskunov June 6, 2018 Abstract In this experiment, elements in an R-C circuit are studied and the time co... nstant was found in different situations. In both investigation 1 and 3, the measured time constant was found to be ? = 125 ?, compared to the theoretical value of ? = 100 ?. Investigation 2 measured a similar value, ? = 111 ?. These measurements all fell within the tolerance, so each value was consistent with the theoretical value. Investigation 3 found that the capacitors set up in series caused the smaller capacitor to dominate the behavior of the circuit, so the discharging of the capacitor occurred too quickly for data to be recorded. For capacitors in parallel, the opposite happened and data was able to be recorded. The final voltages across the .1F capacitor and .5μF capacitor were measured to be ? = 5.494 ± .055 ? and ? = 5.489 ± .049 ?, respectively. These values were not consistent with the theoretical value of ? = 6?, but yielded an error of 8.5%. [Show More]
