Interpersonal Communication Event Analysis 2
This interpersonal communication event analysis will focus on an interpersonal
communication that I had while I was working. Before I became a police officer, I spoke with
many of my friends and loved ones who were already in that line of work. They all shared tips
and gave advice, but the one thing that I heard from almost every one of them was being a police
officer is inevitably going to change who I was as a person. Being ambitious and naïve I
dismissed this over and over. I have been on the job now for just under three years and recently
had a conversation with one of those mentors. We discussed how much the job had in fact
changed me and how I always used to tell him that I was never going to change.
After learning about the reflected appraisal theory, I have come to believe that the theory
played a huge role in my changes over time as a police officer. The book describes the reflected
appraisal theory as building, “a self concept that reflects how we think others see us”
[ CITATION Gam \l 1033 ]. The reflected appraisal theory is also known as the looking glass
theory and was introduced by Charles H. Cooley who was a renowned psychologist [ CITATION
Psy \l 1033 ] . I couldn’t agree with this more because when I go into restaurants in the police
uniform the staff is extremely attentive and all eyes in the establishment are on me. I am also
hypervigilant because there are people that want to hurt me and will do so by any means simply
because of the uniform. However, when I am dressed like a civilian I notice that people treat me
differently than when the uniform is on, but the hypervigilance is still there. I have to have
different sides to myself; the work side and the real side. At work it is important that people view
me as a leader and in control of the situation no matter what life is presenting me. Whereas off
duty this is not the case. My wife has told me that I have become more alpha male both on and
off duty, and I strongly feel this comes from my interactions with others while at work
