The Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela The book, “The Long Walk to Freedom” is an autobiography book which was first published in 1994 and was written by Nelson Mandela himself to discuss th ... e life he faced as an activist as he struggled to fight the apartheid regime and liberate the South Africans from the many problems they faced under the hands of the colonial leadership. The book discusses his life from the time he was born until the time he rose to be the first black president of South Africa. To start with his early life, Nelson Mandela was born and brought up in the royal Thembu dynasty. As a young child, he used to challenge and fight the unjust and the unfair social orders in the community which seemed to oppress some people. Due to his great passion for challenging and fighting the unjust and the unfair social orders, he was nicknamed “Rolihlahla” which when translated means a trouble maker (Mandela, 2013). To pursue his higher education, Mandela joined Clarkebury College, one of the famous colleges in Thembu. He later joined the strict Healdtown School which was known for having very strict and harsh rules which were supposed to be strictly followed by all the students. In this school, he had quite a challenging life as it was hard for him to follow very strict and harsh rules without questioning. It’s after leaving the Healdtown School when he joined the University of Fort Hare where he pursued law, a course he had always yearned for. After completing his studies at the University of Fort Hare, he joined one of the law firms in South Africa where his political knowledge was greatly boosted (Mandela, 2013). In his life as a student and as a worker in the law firm, he continued to show his great passion against unfair and unjust social treatments. He always demanded fair treatment for all the people regardless of their social backgrounds or races. This great passion for fair treatment and fighting unjust and unfair social orders influenced his achievements as an adult where his presidency was free, fair, and favorable to all the people he ruled [Show More]
