Then create a chart that includes causes, characteristics, and facts about TBI in school-aged children. CAUSES CHARACTERISTICS FACTS Falls Motor Vehicle Accidents Assault - Shaken Baby Syndrome Bicycle Accident Sports injuries Physical - Fatigue - Headaches - Impaired movement, balance, and/or coordination - Motor speed and programming deficits (dyspraxia/apraxia) - Nausea - Pain - Reduced muscle strength (paresis/paralysis) - Seizures - Vomiting ● Traumatic Brain Injury ○ “a blow or jolt to the head or a penetrating head injury that disrupts the normal function of the brain.” (American Academy of Neurological Surgeons, n.d.). ● Mild TBI and Severe TBI are two types of TBI’s. ● “Falls cause half (50%) of the TBIs among children aged 0 to 14 years.” Xufurisa. (n.d.) ● “Approximately 2 out of 5 traumatic brain injuries among children are associated with participation in sports and recreational activities.” Cognitive - Attention ● Difficulty switching between tasks ● Impaired sustained attention for task completion or conversational engagement ● Reduced attention span Executive Functioning ● Difficulty with the following: ○ decision making ○ flexibility ○ goal setting ○ initiation and self- monitoring ○ judgment ○ planning and organization ○ reasoning and problem solving ○ strategy selection Information Processing ● Increased response latencies ● Reduced processing speed (e.g., of rapid speech and/or complex language), resulting in confusion Memory and Learning ● Struggles with short term memory ● Struggle following directions ● Difficulty retrieving information from memory Behavior - ...............................................................continued.......................................................................
