In 1830, John Downe emigrated to America, leaving his wife and children in England. He wrote this letter to convince his wife to sail across the Atlantic ocean with their children, and join him in A... merica. To try and persuade his wife, Downe uses many different rhetorical devices. He uses a casual, conversational tone and directly addresses his wife’s concerns using hyperboles, tone, imagery, and strong counterclaims that refute the concerns that his wife has about emigrating to America. Downe creates an image of America that is everything England could not be. It is successful, and has riches just waiting to be discovered. While Downe is highlighting everything that is amazing in America, he is also downplaying all the struggles of arriving there.
