in IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Magazine, vol. 9, no. 1, pp. 90-96, Spring

1. What are the primary issues in this case? Be as specific as possible.
Legal Liability: “responsibility for accidents expands beyond drivers to include the
companies that design, manufacture and maintain self-driving vehicles and the
technology they rely upon, the pool of companies potentially liable for accidents will
deepen” (Falvey 1).
Safety: “creating an end-to-end design and deployment process that integrates the
safety concerns of a myriad of technical specialties into a unified approach”
(Koopman 1).
Financial risk: “$42 billion market for autonomous vehicle by 2025 was an incentive
that would have been difficult for carmakers to ignore” (Orr 1). However, carmakers
aiming to tap into this market also face a financial risk in order to achieve the money
available in this market. Investments into R&D, marketing, and consumer willingness
to purchase the vehicle might not have possible returns on investment.
Brand impact: Being the forefront for the semi/autonomous vehicles/technology can
lead to customer recognition, Competitive edge, Enhanced credibility, etc. (Fanaras
